(NYSE: MKL), announced today the appointment of James Shankland as Head of Ocean Cargo, U.S. In this role, Shankland will lead the growth of Markel's U.S. cargo portfolio. He will be responsible for underwriting strategy, portfolio management and broker engagement. He'll work closely with actuarial, claims, operations and distribution to support disciplined execution across the business.

This appointment reflects Markel's continued investment in its global cargo portfolio and dedication to delivering specialized solutions to U.S. customers by leveraging global experience to address complex risks. The U.S. ocean cargo product builds on the strength and success of Markel's U.S. ocean marine platform and established global cargo business, supporting diverse placements where scale and underwriting discipline matter.

Mit einem Konvoi von mehr als 200 Traktoren haben Hunderte Bäuerinnen und Bauern in Wien auf ihre wirtschaftlich angespannte Lage aufmerksam gemacht. Aufgerufen zu der Kundgebung hatte der neu gegründete Verein „Bündnis Zukunft Landwirtschaft“, der nach eigenen Angaben für „bessere Zukunftsperspektiven“ in der heimischen Landwirtschaft eintritt. Die Demonstration startete um 13.00 Uhr vor dem Landwirtschaftsministerium und zog im Verlauf des Nachmittags über die Ringstraße zur Abschlusskundgebung vor das Parlament.

Im Zentrum der Forderungen standen eine verpflichtende Herkunftskennzeichnung für verarbeitete Lebensmittel sowie der Abbau bürokratischer Hürden. Hintergrund sind nach Angaben des Vereins stark gestiegene Kosten etwa für Diesel und Dünger bei gleichzeitig stagnierenden Erzeugerpreisen. Das Bündnis sieht dadurch die Existenz „vieler Höfe gefährdet“ und spricht von der Notwendigkeit eines „gemeinsamen Schulterschlusses der landwirtschaftlichen Interessenvertretungen“, um auf die Lage der Betriebe hinzuweisen.

Vereinsgründer Sebastian Bauer betonte, man agiere überparteilich und wolle sich nicht parteipolitisch vereinnahmen lassen. Die Anliegen richten sich an mehrere Ressorts, darunter das Landwirtschafts-, das Wirtschafts- und das Gesundheitsministerium. Der Verein mit Sitz in Pamhagen im burgenländischen Bezirk Neusiedl am See wurde erst Anfang März in das Vereinsregister eingetragen und positioniert sich als zusätzliche Stimme in der agrarpolitischen Debatte.

Politisch stoßen die Forderungen des Bündnisses auf breite Resonanz. Landwirtschaftsminister Norbert Totschnig bezeichnete sie als „völlig berechtigt“ und verwies darauf, bereits im Vorfeld mit den Organisatoren im Ministerium gesprochen zu haben. Unterstützung signalisierten auch der ÖVP-Bauernbund, die FPÖ sowie die Umweltschutzorganisation Greenpeace, die erneut eine verpflichtende Herkunfts- und Haltungskennzeichnung verlangte. Wie die Regierung auf den zunehmenden Druck aus der Landwirtschaft konkret reagieren wird, ist vorerst offen.
